"I Love it Here" - June Newsletter

William was born in 1955 on 7th Avenue S., not too far from where he lives today on 2nd Avenue. When he was thirteen years old, he and his family moved to Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and not long after that, at the age of fourteen, William began working as part of a Co-Op program through his high school. His first job was with B.F. Myers Furniture where he stayed for a number of years. After a few years working with The Oscar Meyer Company, William had a 26-year career as a mover working for North American Van Lines.

Unfortunately, William fell on some hard times and developed a heart condition for which he still wears a pacemaker. He spent between five and six years at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Although those were tough years for him, he feels that the Nashville Rescue Mission saved him: "If you are ready to help yourself, it is a good place." Although William appreciates the help that the Nashville Mission gave him, he is thrilled to be a tenant with NLCDC. When asked how long he's been in his new apartment, he quickly replies without hesitation, "Since January, 9th. I love it here; it is so peaceful and quiet."

Part of the pride William feels in his new home comes from the small garden he is cultivating just outside his front door. He has some tomato plants growing, and although the plants are still small, he is waiting patiently for his crop. He says one of his sons tries to convince him to use fertilizer and pesticides in order facilitate bigger plants and a faster crop. However, William refuses: "What ever happened to letting Mother Nature do its thing?" After several years of working in the meatpacking industry, William is very careful and conscious about the food that he eats. He admires the Mennonites ways of growing things and the way that they take care of off the land. Sometimes, William is even able to buy some of their meat, and he says that they are teaching him the best ways to cook it.

What a difference a safe, fit, affordable home has made in William's life. He's heathier, he's thriving just like the tomatoes he's growing in our garden.
