Carey's 47 year Journey Home

About a year ago we shared a story about two of our clients, Carey and Constance. We met them in the summer of 2013. They were living at Sophia's Heart, a nonprofit that provides transitional housing, mentoring, and support for homeless individuals working to get back on their feet. With the stability that Sophia's Heart offered for 2, years Carey and Constance had battled back from PTSD and 25 years of drug use to living healthy, whole lives. They were ready to restart their journey home.

Their lifelong dream was to have a home of their own, something neither of them had ever experienced. Old debts were barriers to them being able to rent and own a home but Carey and Constance were committed to knocking down those barriers. All they needed were the knowledge, tools and trusted advisors. Step 1, after reviewing their credit report, New Level CDC provided debt pay down match dollars and letters to help Carey and Constance secure an apartment and move out on their own again. Step 2, Ashley a financial counselor with Nashville's Financial Empowerment Centers advised them for two years as they paid off their remaining debts. Step 3, Carey and Constance were approved for Nashville Habitat for Humanity's homeownership program and worked over a period of months to meet the education and sweat equity requirements. Step 5, Adhering to our empowerment principle, New Level CDC matched Carey and Constance's savings to help them cover their loan closing costs.

Carey shared with me recently that he was 64 and had been longing for Home for 47 years-- when he left home after high school. Many people from our community who had traveled with them the past few years gathered to celebrate with Carey and Constance as their home was dedicated and they received their keys. Their long journey has ended and they are finally "HOME".
