Connections …..Families, a home and student success

Bobbie found us on the internet and called seeking housing help for her family. Pregnancy complications led to a job loss and she had depleted all available monies. She delivered a healthy baby but was struggling to recover financially. Bobbi and her children were living apart after being evicted from their home of the last 7 years.

When individuals call in with a housing crisis we ask, "Do you have children in Metro Public Schools". Bobbie's two older elementary and middle school children are students at well-known charter schools. The metro schools Heroes program is designed to work directly with families of children that are experiencing homelessness. We immediately contacted our colleagues who run the program and they notified the staff at the boys' schools. Forms were placed in the children's backpacks for their mom to complete and send back that would allow them to receive services.

On any given day in Davidson County you will find thousands of children that are homeless, some like Bobbi's sons who are separated from each other and their mom, farmed out to whoever will take them temporarily. While the work and dedication of the Heroes program staff are impressive their ability to help families with critical housing needs is limited by our community's' housing resources or lack thereof.

Research clearly shows the connection between children's school performance and housing. A recent presentation by a Chamber of Commerce representative stated that over 55% of Metro school children change schools 3 times or more each year. When Bobbi's sons are worrying about where they will be going to sleep at night and where their mom might be sleeping it causes them tremendous stress. Children under this kind of stress struggle to learn, they are worried, distracted and rightfully so. A safe, stable and affordable place for families to raise their kids is fundamental to their ability to achieve in school. Let's make it a part of the conversation and equation for children's' success.

For Bobbi and her sons life is looking better. We connected her with job opportunities and she used our matching debt pay down fund to pay off an old utility bill. Her previous landlord is willing to rent to her again and Bobbi's sons have been receiving extra care and support at school. Connections make a difference especially to the well-being and success of our children.

Thank you to those whose continued support for us provides a way to help families like Bobbi's be together and home again.
